Tutors are students from Binghamton University with solid backgrounds
in at least one of the three areas of concentration and possess a genuine
desire to help students succeed. A light snack is provided to each student
as part of the tutorial service. We also provide an after school pick-up
service using the BCUL van to both East and West Middle School students.
All necessary parental forms must be completed and signed by a parent or
guardian for enrollment and transportation services.
Our goal is to make the tutoring sessions as creative, fun, and enjoyable as
possible. The service is enhanced by the presence of a mentoring service to
provide positive role models. This component utilizes college students, business
professionals and local sororities and fraternities. All persons employed by this
service or volunteering must submit a state clearance form for safety purposes.
In addition, all tutors must attend a diversity training session before actually
beginning the mentoring process.
This year the Satellite Tutorial Program also intends to expand to include a
comprehensive Regent's Program to help prepare our students for the five year
transition. Materials have been provided from the high school such as past
Regents exams, state syllabi, etc. We have also been able to access current
information pertaining to the Regents exam prep site, study guides, practice tests, etc.
The Urban League has been a community employer for the last two years, participating
in Binghamton University’s Student Employment Initiative Program. Juniors and seniors
from the Initiative Program are hired as tutors for the Satellite Tutorial Program to
assist the Middle School and/or High School students with Math, English, Social Studies
and Science. As a community employer for the Initiative Program, the Urban League
receives partial wage reimbursement for each student who qualifies for work study at
the university, which in turn gives the students the opportunity to earn wages and
receive job experience. The tutorial service also consists of undergraduates and
graduate students interning at the Urban League.
