The Broome County Urban League offers these programs to
enable all economically disadvantaged urban children to
experience basic learning opportunities within a multicultural,
multiethnic, positive social dynamic. Since, indeed, it does take
a village to raise a child; the BCUL is committed to serve as
Binghamton's model in providing both the environment and the
services/opportunities to institute this exchange. We offer a
matrix of culture, ideas and values; celebrating the strengths
of our commonality while appreciating and respecting the character
of our diversity.
The yearlong curriculum is designed to enhance social and academic
growth for participants. It provides powerful strategies and practical
applications for development of positive response and decision making
skills, as well as outdoor activities designed to build teamwork.
The academic areas of the service incorporate practice and skills maintenance
in reading and mathematics study skills and personal choice in health and
hygiene issues. Children are encouraged to participate in group activities
that promote teamwork and shared problem solving, allowing them authentic
experiences that encourage the adoption and practice of citizenship skills.
Individual leadership and personal decision making are fostered through the
mentoring of a caring, adult staff. Each child enrolled in the service is
given a daily nutritious dinner and snacks, physical exercise and the adoption
of basic oral and physical hygiene routines and wellness concepts.
This service has consistently proven to support the scholastic achievement
and has promoted academic progress in youngsters who have previously been
classified as "at risk" in particular subject areas. Additionally, youngsters
involved in organized, supervised and directed activities aimed at promoting
positive and constructive use of free time exhibit a lessening of behaviors
that negatively impact the community at large.
